Sadly, I can relate to this. And it has led to great exhaustion for me. And I blame myself for not being disciplined enough for indulging in pathetic luxuries.
You’ve given this feeling a name, and for that I am grateful
What an opening paragraph! Sums up how I feel about most of my engagements with the world. Your other pieces are wonderful too. I've just had my first permaculture ~experience~, which I just wrote about, and embodied your interpretation of luxury. Look forward to your next writing.
This is a beautiful essay (btw overripe mangoes are a great ice cream substitute: wash & wrap in plastic, then put it in the freezer. also works for overripe persimmons)
i spent a month this last winter on an abandoned mango orchard in Ecuador - life changing mangos indeed
Excited to have found this substack! You write in a funny and extremely convincing way.
This question of luxury matters a whole lot to the kind of future we're going to build.
I wrote about it from my spot in North London, with a little help from William Morris and the Paris Communards: https://gregfrey.substack.com/p/well-what-do-we-want
It's what you said, but with others!
